I am struggling to make sense of this - my inclination is to dismiss "modelled party affiliation" as nonsense, or at least not-helpful.

I was pointed to Allsides by @Borg and I really like it. From there I got a prompt today to take a poll at a site called Activote, which I also thought was a great site.

When I entered my voter registration data, the site told me this about the Texas voter demographics -

1757791981836.webp

That made no sense to me, so I tried the following prompt in ChatGPT (I will include the prompt in case anyone wants to duplicate the conversation I had but I won't post the ChatGPT verbatim per forum rules) -

The website myactivote vote shows a graph that says Texas has 37.7% republicans and 45.5% democrats. This does not seem accurate to me. Where are these numbers coming from? Texas is definitely a red state.

ChatGPT basically told me that there something called "modelled party affiliation" that is used to estimate how folks would likely identify themselves if asked. Further, ChatGPT says that Texas is a Red state because of low Blue voter turnout relative to Red turnout.

This just doesn't strike me as reality. Does anyone have any experience with "modelled party affiliation" they could share that might help make sense of this, or does that 'low Blue turnout' conclusion seem reasonable to you?

Here is what the German Wikipedia says:

Texas is now considered a stronghold of American conservatism in Europe.
...
Since the mid-2000s, however, a demographic shift has been taking place in Texas, which is why Republican dominance has been crumbling ever since. While Texas-born George W. Bush's lead over his Democratic opponents was more than 20 percent in both 2000 and 2004 – even Barack Obama was more than ten percentage points behind his rivals John McCain and Mitt Romney in 2008 and 2012 – this changed in the following years. Donald Trump was only nine percentage points ahead of Hillary Clinton in 2016, and four years later, his lead over Joe Biden shrank to five and a half percentage points. Of all the states in which he achieved a majority in 2020, his wins were only narrower in Florida and North Carolina. Given this development, it was initially expected that Texas would develop into a swing state that would be as hotly contested as Florida had been for a long time. In contrast, however, Trump won in 2024 by more than ten percentage points.

This makes more sense.

Or Austin. I have been told that Austin is something special in TX.

Austin is indeed an enjoyable city, especially for live music lovers.

Texas, like America in general, has Blue cities, Austin is almost certainly the Blue-est.

2024 presidential results -

Dallas County - 60 / 38 for Biden
Harris County (Houston) - 56 / 42 for Biden
Travis County (Austin) - 70 / 30 for Biden

Edit:

I should note that Texas has some very red cities as well, Ft Worth for example. Tarrant County (Ft Worth) was 52 / 47 for Trump.
