Here is an interesting study about it:

Nice work Elon! What a moron.
Should the guy have been put in a straightjacket and sent to the looney farm for a while to sharpen up.
Even smart people can go nuts.

I think he went a little bit insane for a couple of years there, throwing tantrums ( on X ), exhibiting violence ( a chainsaw on stage ), something like bi-polar euphoria ( jumping up and down like a kid given candy ), self-destruction ( neglect of home and work ( like a junkie getting a fix, or problem gambler ), and all the other 'odd' things he did around that time.

Certainly he believed in the cause, whatever he thought the cause was, not realizing that he was useful only for the man and crew for a time, a means to an end. A non-Maga pretending to be Maga. Musk might not have leant his lesson, as he still wants in, but that might be the politics ( ie hob-knob with the powers that be for your own business survival ); we shall see if he is really smart, or just plain dumb, but not dumb enough to be smart like a lot of other members of the crew and hangers-on.

Kinda like that mouthy Maga rep from Texas who has fallen out with the man over Epstein, and has now resigned her seat. Failed expectations.
