China Tariff exemptions

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The recent exemption of computers from tariffs under the Trump administration indicates a strategic response to consumer concerns regarding pricing. Approximately 10% of Chinese exports may be affected by these exemptions, which is significant given that 90% of iPhone components are manufactured in China. The imposition of 125% tariffs would have nearly doubled iPhone prices in the U.S. Additionally, the Biden administration's focus on responsible AI has shifted towards a more aggressive approach, sidelining previous initiatives aimed at ethical considerations in AI development.

Some friends and I were just discussing the impracticality of a desktop upgrade when someone noticed that computers were just exempted from tariffs.

I wondered how much of the export pie that is, and the below website has a nice graphic, even though its 2023 data. Its hard to map the high level list of exempted items cleanly to the below graphic, but maybe its ~10% of Chinese exports being exempted?

Anyway, its a sign to me that Trump is sensitive to US consumer pain and is willing to do at least some backing down to avoid it.

It was just on the news. They said that 90% of iPhone components were made in China, and if those 125% tariffs had been applied, the iPhone prices would have almost doubled in the US.

In the AI community, the talk is that initiatives like the Stargate AI project that he bragged about creating (even though it had been in planning since 2022) were going to be damn hard to implement with massive tariffs on chips. Someone must have whispered that bit of irony in his ear since he's too dumb to figure it out on his own.

BTW, the government initiatives that came from the White House during Biden's term had a significant emphasis on responsible AI. Those parts have been largely removed in the latest version. It's more of a win at all costs regardless of the consequences now. I guarantee that the five bullets that government employees are forced to send to OPM every week are but put through F-ELON's Grok. We all know how well that's going.
