A hopeful development? When Trump was cherry picking congresspeople to be in the administration, my own view was the he wanted as thin a majority as he could get in the House in order to make it a practical impossibility for the House to get anything passed without Trump whipping the votes, Freedom Caucus and others as well. This has the effect of making Mike Johnson's role pretty perfunctory, not that he seems to mind.
I think Stefanik's retracted nomination may be a sign that Trump no longer feels so confident that he can heard all the Republican cats in this congress and also a sign that he is concerned about whether R's will hold the House in the next Congress.
