The problem with a way back is that you always ask whether the people you meet have been part of the system. If you want to do it properly, then it is a very stony way. It requires reflection. As long as this narrative of, in my mind, a deeply entangled view of the best country of all in American society exists, as long as there can't be any improvements. It nips any thought of mistakes in the bud. Why bother with improvements if everything is already best?
