SUMMARY

The National Science Foundation (NSF) faces significant funding cuts, with current allocations dropping to $986 million from an average of $2 billion over the past decade. Notably, funding for physics has decreased by 85%, while mathematics funding has fallen by 72%. The discussion highlights the urgent need for advocacy against these cuts, as experts like Kip Thorne emphasize the long-term impact on scientific research and the future of aspiring scientists in the U.S.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of NSF funding structures
  • Familiarity with federal budget allocations for scientific research
  • Knowledge of the impact of funding on scientific disciplines, particularly physics and mathematics
  • Awareness of advocacy strategies for science funding
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the implications of NSF funding cuts on scientific research outcomes
  • Explore advocacy strategies for restoring NSF funding
  • Investigate alternative funding sources for scientists in the U.S.
  • Learn about the role of public opinion in influencing federal science budgets
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for scientists, researchers, policymakers, and advocates concerned about the future of scientific funding and its impact on research and innovation in the United States.

Like all other agencies, NSF is under the chopping block.

Here's a podcast that interviews one of my neighbors discussing the dangers of NSF cuts.

Here is a graphic from the NY Times of the current 2025 fund allocations for different research areas showing the relative decreases

The average funding for the last decade has been $2 B. This year, it is currently $ 986 M. It is possible that some funds will be restored. It should be noted that funding for physics is down 85% and math is down 72%.
