The boot stamping on the human face forever as envisioned by O'Brien in 1984 reminds me of a weird thing about that novel. When interviewed to be enrolled into the so called "resistance", they're asked if they would throw acid into a child's face; no questions asked. I mean, before answering that question I'd like just a smidge of context. It kind of dehumanizes the protagonists that they go along with that so willingly. "Yeah, sure, I'd throw acid in a child's face for the good of the cause. I'm sure there's a good reason. I don't have to know! Weee!"
