SUMMARY

President Trump's address to Congress included a controversial claim regarding $8 million spent by the Biden administration on research involving transgenic mice, which was interpreted as an effort to highlight issues surrounding transgender therapies. The official White House outlet, whitehouse.gov, echoed this claim, leading to confusion over terminology related to the research. Critics argue that this rhetoric undermines liberal democracy and reflects poorly on media reporting. The discussion emphasizes the need for clarity in scientific communication and the implications of political narratives.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of transgenic research and its applications in biomedical studies.
  • Familiarity with the political implications of scientific funding and research narratives.
  • Knowledge of the role of media in shaping public perception of scientific issues.
  • Awareness of the ethical considerations surrounding animal research in the context of gender studies.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the ethical implications of transgenic animal studies in biomedical research.
  • Explore the impact of political rhetoric on public understanding of scientific research.
  • Investigate the funding landscape for transgender studies and related biomedical research.
  • Analyze media reporting on scientific issues and its influence on public policy debates.
USEFUL FOR

Political analysts, scientists involved in biomedical research, journalists covering science and politics, and anyone interested in the intersection of science communication and public policy.

One thing missing from the fact check is Trump's noting the discovery of $8M spent by the Biden administration on research, making mice transgender. The research identified was using transgenic mice (mice with altered genes) to study the effects of hormones on these mice to assess the possible effects on humans.

The problem is not that Trump confused some terms, but the official White House news outlet, whitehouse.gov made the same mistake https://www.whitehouse.gov/articles...t-millions-on-transgender-animal-experiments/

Are you claiming that the transgenic research referenced was not related to hormones used in transgender therapies?

My point was that the reporting of this research was used to outrage the electorate and justify budget cuts. I do not know if the presentation misinterpreted terminology or intentionally misrepresented it.

Science.org has a great writeup on the actual grants affected:

I think that neither the White House/DOGE or the Democratic Party critics have scored any bullseyes on this issue.

I have to say that the most shocking part of the address had to have been the following:

We need Greenland for national security and even international security, and we’re working with everybody involved to try and get it. But we need it, really, for international world security. And I think we’re going to get it. One way or the other, we’re going to get it.

This sort of rhetoric has no place in liberal democracy, and I consider it to be an egregious failure of the media in their reporting of this issue and the other threats.

if we had an "agree" button here (@Greg Bernhardt) I would have hit that instead of "like" since "like" doesn't quite say what I want to say. I think "agree" is more forceful that "like"
