SUMMARY

Pope Francis has been recognized for his vocal opposition to certain Trump policies, emphasizing the importance of secular education and support for STEM fields within the Catholic Church. His legacy includes the promotion of scientific inquiry, exemplified by figures like Monsignor Georges Lemaître, who contributed to modern cosmology, and Marin Mersenne, who advanced the science of acoustics. The discussion highlights the hope that the next Pope will uphold these values while maintaining the crucial separation of church and state.

Pope Francis led an interesting life. While a dedicated atheist myself, aghast at resurgence of superstition, at least the Catholic church at times encouraged secular education and supported STEM teaching.

Consider luminaries such as mathematician physicist Monsignor Georges Lemaître working closely with Hubble, Eddington, Shapely, and other scientists to provide the basis of modern cosmology.

Fellow polymath Marin Mersenne famous for his work with integers also established the science of acoustics, coordinating research efforts across 17th Century Europe. Mersenne worked with other scholars to develop curriculum for secular institutions still in use today.

Hopefully the next Pope continues this scientific tradition while honoring separation of church and state vital for democratic society.
