SCOTUS and Fed Governor Lisa Cook

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) has ruled that Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook retains her position while allegations against her are litigated. President Trump has attempted to remove Cook, who was appointed by the previous Democratic administration, citing accusations of falsifying information on a mortgage application. Historically, there is no precedent for dismissing a Fed Governor for non-job-related causes. SCOTUS is set to hear the case in January, but for now, Cook remains in her role amidst ongoing pressure.

This is good news. SCOTUS seems to have some limits.

For those who are not familiar, Trump wants his own appointees on the Federal Reserve and is looking for any excuse to move Democratic administration appointees out. There is no precedent in US history for summarily firing a Fed Governor for cause, and certainly no precedent for non-job-related cause (she is accused of falsifying information on a mortgage application).

Trump was seeking to remove her from office while the allegations are being argued in court, and SCOTUS has so far said no, she keeps her job at least until SCOTUS hears the case in January.
