It's not recent news but it has been going on for decades.

Unlike other countries most Spaniards believe healthcare is a CIVIL RIGHT and frame access to medical care as a legal, enforceable entitlement rather than a PRIVILEGE, aimed at ensuring equality regardless of income or status.

We support the system by donating to our robust Spanish National Transplant Organization (ONT).

Spain has maintained its position as the world leader in organ transplants for 34 consecutive years. As of 2026, the country continues to hold this record, with over 6,300 organ transplants performed in 2025 alone, cementing a legacy of expertise and high donation rates.

Spain, with only 11% of the total European Union population accounts for approximately 24% of all donations in the Union, thus more than doubling the Union's average.

This reminds me of an American tourist in Barcelona who had forgotten to pack her insulin. So, after landing, they hopped into a taxi and explained the situation to the driver. He drove them to a hospital, where they were not only attended to in English but also received a prescription for insulin. However, they were told that they would have to pay for it themselves, as their insurance did not cover it there.

Now for the punchline: At the pharmacy, they discovered that the insulin - at the Spanish out-of-pocket price - was still so inexpensive that it would actually be cheaper to fly to Barcelona once a month than what they were paying back in the U.S.

I was laughing hard when I read it.
