Trump silences Voice of America as staff put on leave

SUMMARY

The Trump administration has significantly impacted the Voice of America (VoA) by terminating contracts and placing staff on leave, leading to a silence of its channels. This action reflects a broader retreat from global engagement and raises concerns about the reliability of U.S. media in the face of increasing authoritarianism worldwide. Employees, including those with long tenures at USAID, face job insecurity and potential loss of retirement benefits due to recent reductions in force (RIF) and hiring freezes. The situation mirrors historical precedents where independent media served as crucial information sources in oppressive regimes.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of media operations and government influence on broadcasting
  • Familiarity with the implications of reductions in force (RIF) in federal employment
  • Knowledge of retirement benefits for federal employees, particularly MRA+10 eligibility
  • Awareness of the role of independent media in authoritarian contexts
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the impact of government policies on public broadcasting, focusing on the Voice of America
  • Explore the implications of hiring freezes and RIF on federal employment and retirement plans
  • Investigate the historical role of independent media during periods of political repression
  • Learn about the current state of international broadcasting and its significance in global democracy
USEFUL FOR

Journalists, media analysts, federal employees, and policymakers interested in the intersection of government actions and media freedom.

The US is on full retreat from the world stage and democracy. We are no longer reliable. Other countries are going to have to step up and fill the vacuum.

A friend of my wife worked there and was terminated along with everyone else. She really loved her job and now she is out of work. I know too many people that are going to their job each day wondering if they're next. The stress that they're going through is terrible.

I remember before the Eastern Bloc broke down, the German equivalence - I think it was DW or maybe DFF broadcasted on LF - was a major source of information for people living behind the Iron Curtain. It provided neutral facts despite living in regimes that controlled their media. I think BBC and VoA played a similar role. Now that we are living again in times where many regimes control their media (the list is long and getting longer almost monthly) independent radio channels become an important source again.

Too bad we have lost it. I hope they will not recognize that there is still Radio Liberty.

And after my post yesterday, we got word of another acquaintance that got their RIF notice. 49 years old with 15+ years of service with USAID and now looking for a new job. Federal workers can retire at MRA+10 but anyone born after 1970 can't take advantage of it before age 57.

I know others who are within a year or two of being eligible. They are scared to death of getting terminated just shy of their eligibility date and losing all of the retirement benefits that they were promised. In the past, if an agency had a RIF, workers could try to find a new position in another agency where they would have hiring preference. But with the hiring freezes that have also been implemented, a RIF is a death sentence for their retirement options. I can only hope that the next administration is able to do something to restore some decency to these people.
