Absent inappropriate outdated criteria such as gender and ethnicity, we need to strengthen minimum requirements for holding public office. These guardrails should increase along with the responsibilities and importance of the office. Elections must not be simple popularity contests.

The old adage "any citizen can become President"* should not be taken literally to mean everybody is qualified to hold office.
