USEFUL FOR

Activists, journalists, political analysts, and anyone interested in the implications of immigration enforcement and civil rights in the United States.

This is actually what the admin wants. The want their version of SS. Violent and reckless. Always obeying.

With our tax money it's not going to get any better

This administration's positions clash with actual military family tradition going back to antiquity. True warriors protect children, women, elders, disabled, sick and wounded.

During the Cold War against USSR and the hot wars in Korea and Vietnam US military menbers and potential recruits were taught our society superior due to independent thought and personal commitment to civil society. A universal draft ensured that adult citizens recognized this duty to protect society before pursuing mundane monetary gain.

On the practical side warriors adept at forming small groups able to operate independent from central authority due to these shared values could out maneuver mindless automatons dependent on constant direction from authority. Without strong core values and shared sense of morality, the independent warrior devolves to a killing machine destroying those they should be protecting from violence, as demonstrated by this antisocial act.

This is very strange.
Is it? Isn't this exactly what you'd expect from the Trump administration? Your posts seem to reflect a confusion between the lawless and illegal actions of the current administration with the way things are normally done in the US.

The fact that the separation of powers is fading without an outcry from literally everybody is strange.

ICE officers allowed to judge and execute, and no attorney in sight is strange.

The attempt to abandon the independence of the Fed is strange, and SCOTUS never has been. All this is strange in my opinion.

I wondered why it should be a matter for the FBI (police), and not a matter for an attorney independent of the current administration. Executive and legislative power should have nothing to do with it, fullstop. That's what the separation of powers means. It is so basic for a democracy that I wonder why not everybody is outraged.

It shouldn't be just the crime, it should be the fact what it means for a democracy that is strange. The FBI shouldn't even have a say in this. The local attorney should have. And his actions should be justified by office, not by any police departments, and even less so, congressmen or the government. He should be able to work independently of those without the need to justify himself.

I wonder why not everybody is outraged

Certainly we are not seeing a 'George Floyd' type response. People with different political views will watch the same video and draw opposite conclusions regarding self-defense vs unjustified shooting. I have no explanation for why this does not draw a response more similar to the George Floyd killing; I see the situations as similar enough that I'd expect a similar response. That aspect of it is a bit confusing to me, as well. Things I wonder about -

Do these aspects temper the anti-ICE response?

Victim is white
Victim is lesbian
Victim tried to drive away
Federal governments 100% supportive position has an effect on anyone at all inclined to give police any benefit of the doubt
Abuses of Federal police authority are becoming normalized (this is where I land on why not a stronger reaction)

To me, its obvious that the ICE officers had no interest in de-escalation and seemed to desire the opposite. This has me personally outraged. That said, I am 100% sure that I'd have exited the vehicle, there is no way I'd have chosen to drive away. Maybe other folks feeling the same way about what they would have done have their outrage somewhat tempered, not sure.

'Most' Americans feel the shooting was un-justified. About 1/3 feel it was justified, which I suppose is the MAGA base.

Victim is lesbian
While reading coverage of this crime from Washington Post, I was first bemused then dismayed by the repetitious term "wife" applied to the slain driver's passenger. Similar articles about George Floyd's prolonged strangulation in a nearby gutter do not mention matrimonial relations.

Draw your own conclusions, friends.

It's all a play to cast her as an "other". "She's not like you, so she matters less". It's a common tactic of the Trump admin.

Certainly we are not seeing a 'George Floyd' type response. ...

I was referring to the fact that you, as the people, basically abandoned the juridicative power rather than to the incident itself. They go from suspicion to execution in a second! The same holds for the detention centers, the countless people separated from their kids, deported people, and even US citizens who were deprived of their rights.

It is the deconstruction of the USA as a Rechtsstaat that should outrage you, not a single incident in a row of dozens! E.g., I read yesterday that they captured a 17-year-old teenager who worked in a grocery store, threw him to the ground until he was bleeding, ignored his claim that he is a US citizen, and, after verifying this, dropped him off a mile away from the location in a different parking lot, still bloody. The events are countless. However, the consequence of abolishing basic human rights, particularly appealing to courts, is outrageous, not to mention that the current administration is simply ignoring any verdicts in cases that don't suit them. Good was a single example of many, even if this were a pure execution and, as such, a tragedy.

And by the way, who even cares about her sexual preferences? Aren't there currently some popular files about sexual preferences you should be more worried about?

The earliest posts in this forum were around the lack of due process and erosion of rule-of-law as the primary cause for concern with the Trump administration. You are 'preaching to the choir' with that theme on these forums. ChatGPT says this is the equivalent German colloqialism -

Offene Türen einrennen

who even cares about her sexual preferences

If culture wars have a floor with respect to dis-regard for basic humanity, we haven't found it yet. Right wing media discussion of her sexuality is obviously meant to lessen audience empathy for her as a human who was shot dead.

Yes, but isn't that a shot in the knee, given the Epstein files?

given the Epstein files

The US is living in a post 'grab their pussy' world. I am confident there is not one MAGA person who connects those dots.

If there is such a thing in the US as a persuadable voter any more, I hope some of them do.

Its pleasing to see that train of thought getting under at least his skin, though, even if MAGA seems willfully oblivious.

At least the cowards are also scared for their own lives.

Today, Border Patrol Tactical Commander Greg Bovino circulated a “legal refresher” for agents in the field including on the use of force — not a move that screams certainty about their conduct. And the Department has sent memos to volunteers for Minneapolis warning about their “operational security,” covering everything from removing any signs of law enforcement affiliation when they are around their hotels to turning off location settings on their phones so that they can’t be tracked.

I'm not sure what your point is. The other woman in the video was Good's wife. Would you have the same objection if she had been married to a man and the article repeatedly referred to her husband?
